Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?

This picture book is Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg?, a playful philosophy picture book designed for children aged 3–8, written by Polish author Przemysław Wechterowicz, illustrated by Marta Ludwiszewska, translated by Youshi Culture, and published by Sichuan Fine Arts Press in October 2018.

Taking the classic philosophical puzzle “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” as its starting point, the book won the White Ravens Award, has been jointly recommended by scientists, philosophers, and education experts, and has been licensed for publication in countries and regions including France, the UAE, and Estonia. With a Douban rating as high as 9.0, it is an excellent choice for parent-child reading that inspires thinking and encourages questions.

The story follows a little chick named “Mili” as she asks around the farm — the rooster, the hens, the cat, the dog, the goat, the cow, the horse, and even the scarecrow — guiding children to think about the origins of life and cause and effect, and nurturing independent and critical thinking. The ending offers no standard answer; instead, an unexpected twist encourages children to embrace uncertainty and keep exploring.

The cover is a bright yellow background with a hand-drawn chick hatching out of its shell — visually striking, playful, and full of philosophical charm.
